Travel: spring break 2012 in Maui

For spring break this year we took a much needed break from the rain and cold and headed to the island of Maui. Just a few years before we were in Kauai for our honeymoon, so I was excited to see the difference between the two. In the end I preferred Maui by a mile, found there were more things to do on this island, it was more tropical, and the weather was a bit nicer. I can’t wait to go back.

When we weren’t indulging in banana macadamia nut pancakes or fresh seafood, we were out exploring the island by land or sea. The highlight of the trip was a day spent on a zodiac raft with Maui Ocean Riders for some snorkeling and sight-seeing. We left Maui early morning out of Lahaina, and crossed the channel over to Lanai. The first stop was along the North Lanai shoreline, where a decaying ship had grounded decades ago. We then cruised along a bit further for a quick stop along the beach. After a few people swam up to the beach, we loaded back up and headed around the northwest point of the island. Right around here was our first snorkeling stop. Although a couple of people on the raft were eager to jump in, it took us a few minutes to build up the courage to dive into the crystal clear water. Once the fins were on and our snorkels were in place, we both took the plunge and instantly realized this water was awesome! After a couple more snorkeling stops along the west shore (one location is supposed to be one of the ten best spots in all of Hawaii, it was impressive), we cruised back across rough waters to Lahaina. A couple of times I was sure the boat was going to tip, but we made it back to Maui, mostly dry.

We also explored all over the island. We took a drive up to the northwest shore above Ka’anapali to hike around and photograph the surfers. We drove down to Kihei and Wailea to explore the south shore beaches. We drove the Road to Hana, hiked up to the Seven Pools, and drove the barely-single lane road around the south side of the island. A couple of spots along the south side you’re on a single lane road looking straight down at the ocean. It’s rare I drive with both hands on the wheel, but for a couple of stretches I was 10 and 2, especially when the locals came flying towards us! You just pull over as far as you can, because they’re not slowing down.

Of course while in Hawaii, you have to have your share of fresh seafood. We ate delicious fresh Mahi Mahi at Kimo’s in downtown Lahaina, and had amazing sushi at Sansei’s in Kapalua.

Our flight home had an overnight layover in San Jose. At first thought this was quite a bummer that we didn’t have a direct flight, but once we realized San Jose has an In-n-Out Burger, we didn’t mind so much Late to bed, up early for our final leg of the return home, and we were back home in rainy and cold Portland.
